Roy M. Mason was born on March 15, 1886 in Gilbert Mills, New York. A self-taught artist, Mason received his education from an art correspondence course and by working at his father’s engraving business. He later became the head of the art department for a Philadelphia lithography company while maintaining a painting studio.

By 1916, Mason had settled in Batavia, New York and was producing watercolors for exhibition and sale. Artist Chauncey Ryder, Mason’s close friend, provided professional criticism for Mason’s artworks. Mason’s works began as a small watercolor sketch while out on location and made notes if there were people or animals included within the work. From the sketches, he would then create a larger watercolor painting in his studio. Throughout his career, Mason also produced commercial illustrations for Collier’s, True, and Reader’s Digest. By the 1930s, Mason began spending more time in California and eventually in 1959 officially moved to La Jolla, California where he stayed for the last twenty years of his life until his death in 1972. Mason is most well known for his depictions of fishing and hunting scenes, but he also created paintings with landscape and coastal subjects.
