John Hubbard Rich was born in Boston, Massachusetts on March 5, 1876. At an early age, John Hubbard Rich moved with his family to Minneapolis. He later attended art classes at night while working during the day as an illustrator for the Minneapolis Times. In 1898, he began a four-year study period at the Art Students League in New York City followed by three years at the school of the Boston Museum. While studying in Boston, he was awarded a two-year traveling scholarship to Europe. After a period back in Boston, he taught art at the University of Southern California and the Otis Institute for 28 years. In his studio in the Hollywood Hills, Rich produced portraits, figure studies, still lifes, and flower studies. Rich died in Los Angeles on March 30, 1954.
