Born in Chicago, Illinois on June 10, 1888, Frank Gavencky was a painter of Czech descent. Gavencky studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, as well as with Antonin Sterba and Charles W. Dahlgreen. His one man show at the Pasadena Art Institute in 1931 received rave reviews. His love of the Pacific Coast brought him often to California during the 1930s to exhibit and paint, and where he wrought a prolific body of work including Pacific Grove seascapes, peopled street scenes, Southern California desert cactus studies, and farm scenes. He also painted many landscapes of Rancho Santa Fe and Ramona where he ultimately settled and resided until his death on February 13, 1966. Stylistically, Gavencky evolved a synthesis using his highly realistic technical bravado, softened with an impressionistic brush style.
