Walter Koeniger
(1881-1943)
Walter Koeniger, "The Painter of Snow," was born in Germany on May 6, 1881. Koeniger was the son of an architect, but turned from architecture at a young age to study painting. He studied at the Düsseldorf Academy under Eugene Gustac Dücker and Eduard Karl Franz Gebhard.
Koeniger immigrated to America around 1910 and joined the artists' community of Woodstock, New York in 1912. Here, he abandoned the crisp, photographic realism he had learned at the Düsseldorf for a more painterly, expressive technique. Koeniger was inspired by the snowy vistas of the Catskill Mountains, and spent the rest of his 30-year career sketching and painting scenes of frozen water around his home. He painted until the time of his death in 1943.
