Sam Hyde Harris, a landscape painter, was born in Brentford, Middelsex, England on February 2, 1889. Fifteen years later, Harris immigrated to the United States with his family, where they settled in Los Angeles. As a teenager he attended evening classes at the local Art Students League and the Cannon Art School under Hanson Puthuff, Will Foster, Lawrence Murphy, F. Tolles Chamberlain, and Stanton MacDonald-Wright. His early paintings (1920-40) reflect the influence of his teacher and sketching partner, Hanson Puthuff, and are bathed in light and atmospheric effects. He worked in commercial art throughout his career, painting signs, billboards and hand-lettered show cards, and also taught at the Chouinard Art School for many years. By 1914, he had established his own commercial painting business. He enjoyed a successful career, painting for clients such as, Atchison, Topeka, Santa Fe, and Southern Pacific Railway Companies. In 1950, Harris bought Jack Wilkinson Smith’s studio in Alhambra, where he subsequently lived for the rest of his life. The nearby San Pedro harbor was one of his favorite painting spots.

Sam Hyde Harris was "Highly recognizable because of his six-foot-three stature and cigar." He "was known for his jovial personality and his love for his adopted California and her landscape." He preferred painting en plein air to the studio; he loved the outdoors. Harris’s paintings employ a progressive composition, pushing the viewers eye to an unexpected place. Harris won over 100 awards in Southern California exhibitions from 1936 until his death in Los Angeles, on May 30, 1977.
