Robert R. Whale (1805-1887)
Robert Reginald Whale was born at Alternun, England in 1805. He is regarded as a self-taught artist who learned his craft copying at the National Gallery in London. England. With his large family, he emigrated to Brantford in 1852.
In 1848 he was elected an associate member of the Royal Academy (England); in 1871 he was a founding member of the Ontario Society of Artists (OSA); and in 1881 he was elected an associate of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA).
Here his work was shown widely in the agricultural fairs and provincial exhibitions where he is recorded as a frequent prize winner. He moved back to Brantford, Ontario in 1864, where he lived for the rest of his life until his death in 1887.
Whale painted primarily in oil using a wide variety of subjects: animal, genre, landscape, portrait and still life. His style attempts to represent the academic tradition of painting of Sir Joshua Reynolds and in landscape, he followed the concepts of the sublime and the picturesque.
