Raoul de Longpre
(1859-1911)

Raoul Maucherat de Longpre was born in Lyon, France, September 13, 1859, in the center of the French textile industry. Raoul was the younger brother of the better-known Paul de Longpre who immigrated to the U.S. in the 1890’s. The two brothers apparently shared an apartment in Paris at 25 Rue Neuve des Mathurins from 1877 to 1879.

Raoul, like his brother, was a renowned painter of floral still lifes, though in a distinctly different style. The majority of Raoul de Longpre's paintings were executed in gouache and have a dark background, which were possibly emulating the style of his distinguished father, Jean Antoine.

He exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1877 and 1880; and although there is no evidence that Raoul ever visited the United States, apparently his work was shown in this country as early as the 1880's in Denver, Colorado. Three volumes of decorative cloth template designs by Raoul de Longpre can be found in the archives of the Textile Museum in Lyon, France. Raoul de Longpre died in 1911.

Works Held: National Museum of American Art (Washington, D.C.).
