Maurice Sterne
(1877-1957)


Maurice Sterne was born in Libau, Russia on July 13, 1877. He came to the United States in 1890 and began his art training at the National Academy of Design and Art Students League in New York City. After 1914, he divided his time between Italy and the United States. An internationally recognized artist, he was one of the first artists to discover Bali and popularize scenes of that area. He was a visiting instructor at the California School of Fine Arts during 1935-36. He died in New York on July 23, 1957.

Exhibited: Painters and Sculptors of Los Angeles, 1930; San Francisco Museum of Art, 1935 (solo); Golden Gate International Exposition, 1939; other nationally and abroad exhibitions.

Works Held: Art Institute of Chicago; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Carnegie Institution; Metropolitan Museum; Boston Museum; Detroit Museum; Corcoran Gallery of Art; Cleveland Museum; Yale University; Tate Gallery, London; Library, Department of Justice Building (murals); San Diego Museum.
