Leon Gaspard (1882-1964)
A painter born in Vitebsk, Russia in 1882, Leon Gaspard came to New York City in 1916. In Vitebsk, Gaspard studied with Julius Penn. His studies continued in Odessa, Moscow, and finally in 1899 at the Academie Julian, Paris with Toudouze and Bouguereau. From 1908-1910, he painted in Siberia. While fighting as a pilot for France during World War I, Gaspard was shot down. In 1918 he settled in Taos where he remained until his death in 1964. He is best know for his bright palette of loose impressionistic scenes.

Works Held: Art Institute of Chicago; Museum of New Mexico.
