Lee Blair
(1911-1993)


A painter, colorist, and illustrator, Lee Blair was born in Los Angeles, CA on October 1, 1911. He studied with D. A. Siqueiros, Morgan Russell, Lawrence Murphy, Pruett Carter, and at the Chouinard Art School. During the late 1930s, he worked in the art department at Walt Disney Studios, where he taught life drawing and was Director of Color and Animation, working on both Pinocchio and Bambi. A resident of New York in the 1950s, he was president of the New York Film Producers Association for two terms and helped establish the Mayor’s New York desk for Film Production. Many of his paintings are of regional scenes of people in everyday activities. He died on June 19, 1993.

Member: California Watercolor Society; American Watercolor Society; Laguna Beach Art Association; New York Film Producers Association (president).

Exhibited: California Watercolor Society, 1931-42; Painters and Sculptors of Los Angeles, 1932-37; Golden Gate International Exposition, 1939.

Awards: first prize, Olympic Exhibition, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 1932; first prize, Arizona State Fair, 1932; Osborne Prize, American Watercolor Society, 1933.

Works Held: California Palace Legion of Honor; Polytechnic High School, Los Angeles.

"Mary By The Sea" was exhibited in 1934 at the Biltmore Salon and 1935 at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
