Jefferson Stephen Ward was born in St. Joseph, Missouri in 1876. Ward studied with Nicholas Brewer and Maurice Braun in San Diego. During the 1920s he lived in Glendale, California where he opened an art gallery with his son Thurlow Ward. By the early 1930s the elder Ward had moved to Jacksonville, Oregon, but soon returned to Los Angeles, where he died on July 22, 1949.

Exhibited: Arizona State Fair, Phoenix, 1923; Witte Museum, San Antonio, 1929; Oregon State Fair, 1930.
Works Held: Fairfax High School, Hollywood.
