Primarily a landscape painter, Frank Coburn was born in Chicago, Illinois on July 4, 1862. Coburn began his art career as an ornamental sign painter. He was primarily self-taught except for a period of brief study at the Art Institute of Chicago and in St. Louis. After moving to Los Angeles from the Midwest in 1909, he was active in the local art scene. In California, he developed his own unique style reminiscent of the Barbizon school of painters. He took numerous painting trips within California where he must have gained inspiration for his many Impressionistic landscapes. He devoted much of his time to local Los Angeles scenery of commerce, and subjects illustrating ethnic diversity, as well as day and evening scenes of downtown. Coburn eventually sold his Los Angeles studio in 1928, and continued to paint out of his Santa Ana, California home or on the road during his art excursions. Coburn had a one-man show at the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana in 1938, before his death that same year in Santa Ana, California on November 13, 1938. His paintings bear witness to some of the great changes that affected Los Angeles during the early twentieth century.
