Charles L. A. Smith (1871-1937)
Born in Auburn, Michigan on January 11, 1871, Charles L. A. Smith was a self taught painter and spent his early career in Chicago. He visited California sometime before 1908 but did not settle in Los Angeles until the 1920s. He was an art director of the Jonathan Club in Los Angeles at the time of his death on November 26, 1937. Primarily a landscape painter, Smith also painted portraits.
