Ben F. Berlin
(1887-1939)

A portrait painter who first painted in realistic style and then turned to cubism and abstraction in the 1920s, Benjamin Berlin was born in Washington D.C. on November 16, 1887 and moved to Los Angeles in 1914 where he studied at Cannon Art School and the University of Southern California as well as under William Cahill and John H. Rich for six months.

Until his death on October 16, 1939, he worked for the WPA, and his work seemed to grow increasingly abstract, seemingly much affected by his alcoholism during the deepening Depression. His work is in the Long Beach Museum of Art.
