Bernard Gutmann, a painter etcher, and teacher, was born on September 26, 1869 in Hamburg, Germany. He moved to the United States to pursue his career in 1892. He had received his art education in Dusseldorf and Karlsruhe, Germany, Paris, and New York City.

From 1892 to 1899, Gutmann lived in Lynchburg, Virginia and became supervisor of public school art programs, where he strongly influenced the local arts community. He married financial heiress Bertha Goldman, who became the subject of many of Gutmann's figurative paintings. He maintained a studio in Paris from 1907 to 1911, where he completed French pastoral scenes. The couple then returned briefly to New York, before building a home in the artist's colony, Silvermine, Connecticut. They traveled frequently to Europe but made their home in Gutmann's adopted country. In 1934, Grimm became the regional director for The Public Works of Art Project, based in New Canaan, Connecticut. He died in New York on January 23, 1936.

Art critics greatly admired Gutmann's lush, Impressionist figures, still lifes, interiors, and landscapes. His work received positive attention in many juried exhibits during Gutmann's life, including the 1936 New York Armory show.
