Balthasar Kundert was born in Linthal, Switzerland on November 3, 1892. Kundert worked as a waiter in Paris and clerked in a department store in Lima, Peru. During the 1930s, wanderlust brought him to San Francisco where he began studying art. He then moved to Los Angeles and continued as a pupil of Nicolai Fechin, who became his mentor and close friend. Kundert died in Lubbock, Texas in August 1985.
