Alice V. Fullerton
(1864-1963)
Alice Verema Fullerton was born on the prairie near Sarcoxie, Missouri on June 21, 1864. Her early years were marred by tragic events and the information regarding her early life is incomplete.
Fullerton studied art at St. Louis School of Fine Art, Washington University (probably in the 1890s), according to her own account. Later, she taught for three years at Forest Park University, St. Louis (1901-1902), and appeared as an artist in the Saint Louis City Directory from 1903 to 1905.
Some of her early works include scenes of Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park when she moved extensively throughout the West in search of subject matter. Her desire to paint seascapes led her to Laguna Beach, California in 1910. Fullerton loved Laguna. She bought a lot, built a home and a studio, and became one of the earliest members of the art colony there. She was a founding member of the Laguna Beach Art Association in 1918 and one of the earliest curators of the Laguna Art Gallery.
Fullerton is best known for her watercolor landscapes of eucalyptus trees, so much so that she was dubbed the "painter of trees." Additionally, her mountain and seascapes, and missions in moonlight are also signature subjects of hers.
Alice Fullerton was a resident of and active in Laguna until the last two years of her life. Blind with age, she was taken to Basler rest home in Santa Ana where she died on July 22, 1963 at age 99. Due to her longevity and contribution to the community, Fullerton has been called the "Dean of Laguna Artists."
